no, we do need many many many small ones to relieve the pressure. As the pressure of the moving plate builds higher and higher, the quake when the plate force overcomes the frictional resistance will be greater. When loosening a bolt, would you rather the bolt loosen smoothly and quickly, or would you like to have to apply a ton of force and when the bolt finally breaks free, your hand smacks into the brake rotor?

so I was on a class field trip Saturday at the Pinnacles. We were hiking through a cave and there was a girl ahead of me that I had been joking around with all day, so when it was really dark closed in I grabbed her backpack, shook it, and went "EARTHQUAKE!!!" she freaked the **** out.
